Chiltepin

Chiltepin

The Chiltepin or Chile Tepín (Cap. annuum var. Glabriusculum) is one of the more known wild peppers. It is native to the Southern part of the United States and Northern Mexico. These peppers are both found in the wild and domesticated. Tepín is derived from a Nahuatl word meaning "flea". The tiny pods of 0.8 cm (0.31 in) diameter are usually sun-dried and used that way in cooking. You can also pickle the green fruit. Watch out – these fire marbles have a kick. However, the heat wears off quicker than with other peppers. The plant grows into a low but voluminous bush and prefers warmth to ripen the fruit.
