Aribibi Gusano

Aribibi Gusano

Aribibi Gusano - can you see why the name translates to "wriggly worms"? This Cap. chinense is one of our all time favourites for a few reasons. The pepper surprises with an intense aroma and citrusy flavour. We find it not just delicious but also appreciate the considerable heat level which can exceed Habanero levels akin to something one would expect from newly created cultivars but not from a traditional Bolivian variety. Another bonus is the high yield. The plants grow into a dense bush and in coco / perlite with the right nutrients we had frequent and generous harvests (of course it’s fine to grow these in soil, too). Finally the unique shape and colour: the phenotype is short and oblong with a blunt tip while ranging from white to creamy. The skin is slightly bumpy. They really do look like little worms, especially off the stem as you can see in the photos. We’ve also read that this pepper has some Cap. frutescens genes but can’t confirm this.

Please note that this pepper has many names / variations such as Arivivi Gusano (or Gusanito), Caterpillar or Worm Chilli and Aji Gusanito.

We recommend making sauces with this pepper – either with white fruit (see pic – we used pear and added Faddas White) or to keep it simple without too many other ingredients to highlight the pepper’s flavour which we did in the form of a simple vinegar-based sauce.
